Keeping Kids Active over winter!

November 10, 2009 By: Liz McNamara Category: Fun, Things to do

I was going to write this post about normal activities kids can take part in such as tennis, netball, swimming malarky, however i decided that you would probably know all that already! So instead I’ve decided to theme it around the winter season.

Ice Skating
With programs such as ‘Dancing on Ice’ being a massive hit with children and adults, its no wonder ice skating has had a resurgence over the past couple of years. I personally still have nightmares about when I tripped on the ice and knocked a girl’s front tooth out with the blade of my boot (yes there were tears and blood eek!) but I do think it is a great winter activity to enjoy if you’re not too accident prone like me! Plus the sooner children learn how to skate, the better so book your kids into a beginners class to get the basics. If they want a bit of inspiration then the Dancing on Ice Tour goes up and down the country which is great to go see and has had some rave reviews. I’m dreaming of being whisked to London to have a bash at skating at Somerset House. Someone told me you get given cupcakes and champagne while you’re there which is enough to make me book my train!

Skiing/Snowboarding
Now this is an activity which always crops up when the kids are teenagers and want to go on the school ski trip. Its a fantastic talent to have if you learn at an early age and you can get the hang of it while you’re fearless! All counties have some sort of ski slope centre for you to go down and have whirl. You can hire everything from ski boots to ski clothing so there’s no need to go and buy everything before your first lesson. If however you and your little ones feel like they love it and want to attend regularly then investing in warm jackets and clothing is a good idea - Get The Label have some fantastic cheap buys so you don’t need to break the bank to be warm.

Sledging
Obviously only possible when its snowing but fun fun fun nonetheless! I have always found that a black bin liner works a treat as a sledge but if you feel like you want something a little sturdier get down to your local garden centre where they’ll have everything from plastic ’scoops’ to the traditional wooden ones.

Walking
This may seem like a little bit of a no-brainer, however I’ve found that the easiest (and cheapest!) activity is just to pull on your wellies and warm winter clothing and head off on a walk together as a family. I’ve always made sure that we pass a little country pub on the way so that the kids (and Mr Hectic Mum) don’t whine too much about being starving and dying! Its a great activity to get some fresh air in your lungs, enjoy the countryside around you and, if its snowing, have a snowball fight!

Well thats my done…bring on the snow!
